Even on the most remote locations of Croatian coast cyclic
tourist pressure is inducing sudden and chaotic transformations; while
the intrinsic slowness of planning tools denies the possibilities to
drive, control and organize existing growth dynamics. Here the proliferation
of single parcel houses generated an isomorphic landscape, interrupted
only by the haughtiness of big hotel complex.
Mapping the genetic code of the sampled urban ecosystem, and the recognition
of its specific character allows the definition of a taxonomy of micro
devices, and prefigure their plug in the context of Dubrovnik. These
new devices mutate and complete the discovered code like evolved organisms,
from which they emulate the aggregative modalities.
Complex filaments formed by the opposition of heterogeneous substances,
dense agglomerate generated by their attraction and microscopic spores,
scattered throughout the territory, create Kornelija, an environmental
meta-organism in which the distinction between natural and artificial
becomes fluid, in witch program and landscape are melted together, compressing
and hybridating existing spatial relations.
Kornelija is an urban meta-organism composed by three distinct parts
strictly related to each other:
NUCLEUS / CORE
It’s its hardest part, the dense nucleus, a big circular container
in which necessary spaces to the most urban functions coagulate. Two
levels of underground parking spaces form Kornelija’s belly. The
garden roof that covers Kornelija’s nucleus it’s a flat surface
in continuity with the surrounding orography, which gives access to the
interior of the organism, or simply to the panoramic view of the bay.
FILAMENTS
The new surface reorganizing the area of the beach and its immediate
surroundings constitutes Kornelija’s skeleton, its sustaining structure.
An equipped ribbon of aggregated devices mediates the transition between
the beach and the residential area, and connects Kornelija to the capillary
system of pedestrian routes that crosses the entire urban tissue.
SPORES
Kornelija’s nerves, small fragments detached from the main filament,
partial and specific urban devices able to open new relations within
the urban ecosystem they need to interact with.
Kornelija has a nucleus constituted by a translucid skin, in which a
series of compact and specialized spaces, inside different containers,
are floating. The main filament is a long wooden route on a constant
dialogue with the elements of the landscape. Spores are made of light
materials and green elements.
