Salottobuono at UNPLANNED.
Salottobuono will exhibit the Manual of Decolonization at UNPLANNED: Research and Experiments at the Urban Scale, the first SUPERFRONT LA exhibit of 2010.

Just as the discipline of architecture faces a re-imagination of itself in this era of slow-motion global capitalism, the human population finds itself crossing the threshold to a predominantly urban existence. Many of the basic tenets underpinning urban planning – Cartesian geometry, programmatic taxonomy, contextualism – have been subject to skeptical investigation and rebellion in architecture throughout the past decade. Yet conventional urban planning continues, the discipline of urban planning operating much as it has since the 1960s (if not the 1860s). Leveraging an interdisciplinary focus, UNPLANNED: RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTS AT THE URBAN SCALE boldly presents a collection of radical methods for envisioning and producing space at the urban scale.

A group exhibit with more than twenty participants, UNPLANNED spans architecture, urban design, industrial design, conceptual art, and cartography to present an array of experimental work at the urban scale. Multi-disciplinary practitioners address emergent urbanism, “wild building”, and other alternatives to conventional urban planning. The exhibit is curated by SUPERFRONT Founder + Director Mitch McEwen with Associate Curator Cecilia Brock and Gallery Intern Jackie Koenig.

Work is exhibited in multiple formats, from physical models to drawings, animations, software applications, consumer products, and live film. Dealing with urban situations from derelict construction sites to refugee camps, favelas, temporary housing and other contemporary spatial phenomena, the exhibition confronts the current economic crises and larger issues of globalization.

September 12th 2009 [ 11th INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL BIENNAL ]

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Scenarios for the transformation of Israeli settlements.
Decolonizing Architecture takes part to the 11th International Istanbul Biennal. The installation "Returns", charts a wide field of political, social and cultural practices of return. Current returns are defined by attempts to navigate the complex relation between two places: the space of refuge and the place of origin.

The wall mounted "Manual of Decolonization" helps to investigate ways of returning that recognise, respond to, challenge and subvert the physical realities that have been created since the foundation of the state of Israel. Salottobuono designed several 'strategies of subversion' for Israeli residential settlements in the West Bank and included them in the "Manual of Decolonization": a generic toolbox for post-occupation scenarios. Through its modularity it creates the potential for architecture freed up by 'fragments of possibility', and through which current political terms for a 'solution' to the conflict are replaced by fluid and adaptable proposals.

March 13th 2009 [SLO ITA AUT]

The symposium "SLO ITA AUT DISCUSSIONS" is a series of events and discussions among three countries. After the presentation in Graz and Trieste the symposium will be concluded in Ljubljana on 13th March 2009 at the City Museum of Ljubljana. Six respected Austrian (Bramberger Architects, Graz; Yes Architects, Graz; Innocad Lila, Vienna) and Italian architecture studios (Metrogramma, Milan; Salottobuono, Venice; MAP, Venice) will introduce themselves by giving short lectures entitled "Let's dance".

The final discussion, where Slovene architects will also participate, will be led by the Italian theoretician Giovanni Damiani. The main subject will be the problem of contemporary architecture; they will try to find the answer to the question "How does the architecture sound in the times of recession? Is it lounge, electro or rock or should we invent a completely new category?"

The main purpose of the symposium is not just to present individual projects of Austrian and Italian architecture offices, but to exchange various interests, views and to present the productivity of respected younger architects of all three neighbour countries. These discussions open new possibilities for mutual cooperation between Slovenia, Austria and Italy regarding architecture, urbanism and culture.

October 30th 2008 [MANUAL OF DECOLONIZATION]

Scenarios for the transformation of Israeli settlements.
Decolonizing Architecture opened today at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Bruxelles. The exhibition displays a series of architectural proposals to open an 'arena of speculation' about possible futures for Palestine. It focuses on two case studies: the Israeli settlement of P'sagot – a hill near Ramallah –, and the abandoned military camp of Oush Grab, near Bethlehem.

Salottobuono designed several 'strategies of subversion' for Israeli
residential settlements in the West Bank and included them in a
"Manual of Decolonization": a generic toolbox for post-occupation scenarios. The manual determines to what extent the evacuated structures
are flexible to accomodate new uses, and displays the various ways in which they can be adapted or transformed, on a detailed architectural scale.

This is the first comprehensive exhibition of this project, a work in progress with many organisations and Palestinian people involved.

One of the desirable outputs of the workshop will be to establish a network, a platform of discussion and reflection on the key issue of the 2015 Expo, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

The growing project will be shown in Gemak (Den Haag) in the frame of

they are unplugged from the military/political power.
Salottobuono is designing a "Decolonization Manual" – a generic toolbox, designed for professional planners as well as private users.

February 9th, 2008 [SCHENGEN]

EU Barcode - OMA/AMO, 2006

SCHENGEN exhibition at Galerie Feinkost, Berlin.
With work by Matei Bejenaru, Alexey Chebykin, Matteo Ghidoni (Salottobuono), Pablo Helguera, IRWIN/NSK.STATE.COM, Ciprian Muresan, OMA/AMO, Hito Steyerl, REP Group.

OMA/AMO’s proposed barcode flag for the European Union captures exactly how disconnected the components of this expanding unionization project are from becoming a whole. Schengen, the name of a small town in Luxembourg, has become the buzzword referring to the systematic breakdown of physical and virtual borders dividing countries in Europe. The Schengen Agreements ask for the establishment of information sharing networks, the harmonizing of policies ranging from immigration to transparencies of markets, and are ultimately the final step for becoming the non-entity status of “European.” Considering the voracious pace at which the EU is bringing members into its club, the commonalities that push would-be and non-members on a quest for “normalization” adds a new dimension from which artists and citizens cull fascination in analyzing their own nationhood in flux. This grouping of artists, architects, and theoreticians gives a composite sketch of Schengen that promotes Europe through re-envisioning borders, disappearing locality, the creation of national palimpsests and informal markets, inspiring alternative modes of entry, exile and escape; and overall, helping make identities more flexible.

June 7th, 2007
Salottobuono will give a lecture inside Challengers, an event that will take place at Laboratorio Occupato Morion (Venice), during the days of the vernissage of the 52nd Art Biennale. Our speaking will be enriched by a streaming connection with Giovanni Piovene, from Berlin, telling us about the ex-NSA Radar Station of Teufelsberg and its actual life as precarious space frequented by occasional users.

Here's the abstract of the lecture:

Autotransfusion: from Enclosure to Phantom Limb, to Enclosure again
Salottobuono will lead you in a little journey through the recent history and the contemporary paranoia about home security. Analyzing the connections between the military and the civilian paradigms, we’ll try to document two different kinds of autotransfusion: on the big, territorial scale, with an attempt to investigate the identity of a dismissed military zone in Pula (Croatia), and, on the microphysical scale, with an overview over the design of some brand new paramilitary products.
