After a 6-years-long collaboration, Salottobuono's associates decided to split up and dissolve their partnership. Starting from now, Salottobuono's website will become the archive of the accomplished works and researches. We'd like to thank all the people who, during those years, have contributed to the development of the office and those who sustained it. The single associates (Ludovico Centis, Marco Ferrari, Matteo Ghidoni, Fabio Gigone, Michele Marchetti, Giovanni Piovene) can still be reached at their personal email addresses.

Urban Genome Project
Salottobuono has been invited to play an active role in the Urban Genome Project. The two initiators of this research program are the editor and curator Joseph Grima and the artist and architect Pedro Reyes. They have set an ambitious goal: to "map the code on which cities are written”, thereby assembling an index of tools for improving the urban environment, with a specific focus on political processes. To collect testimonies on this subject, a mobile unit resembling an expandable toolbox, designed by artist Pedro Reyes, will be mobilised as the venue of a series of live exchanges of knowledge between strategic agents, citizens, politicians and decision makers. The first working session will be hosted in the frame of Artissima in Torino.

In via Montefiori, the town of Esino Lario and its map coincide.

September 13th 2010 [KALEIDOSCOPE WS]
Salottobuono will present during an introductory meeting the workshop that will be led in the frame of the program for the 2010–2011 season for Kaleidoscope’s project space, curated by Michele D’Aurizio and Eva Fabbris. Evocatively structured around the theme of an “escape plan,” the programming focuses on artistic, project-related and critical-curatorial practices that reflect on the themes of alternative scenarios and “counterprojects,” and in doing so, discuss their own relationship with history and tradition. The program strives to identify within these practices a subversive or critical nature with regard to the status quo.
Through four workshops Kaleidoscope’s project space will provide new opportunities for elaborating aspects of the creative process that are usually hidden from view. It will act as a place where the public can experiment with a discursive approach to artistic methods. The workshops are founded on an interdisciplinary approach that opens up the discussion of the visual arts to considerations about music, cinema, architecture and literature.

May 14th 2010 [AA CITY CULTURES]
The city as a catalogue. Towards a user's manual.
Starting from the presentation of the just published Manual of Decolonization, Salottobuono will take part to a roundtable at the AA London – together with Pier Paolo Tamburelli, from Baukuh – addressing the issue of the contemporary city.
If we consider the city as a catalogue of architectural devices and functions, the manual can constitute the active counterpart of the catalogue: while the latter analyzes the urban fabric through the detection of its particular elements, the first one foresees new scenarios through the instructions on how to proceed on their basic stages. They share a common language and methodology and, because of this, they become bodies in communication. Within this perspective, analysis isn't anymore an essential preamble to design – different and detached from it –, but the project itself can become a fertile device for research.
The roundtable is part of the events organized within the AA City Culture Research Cluster, directed by Marina Lathouri.

It includes all the strategies conceived and designed for the architectural trasnformation of the Israeli settlement within the Occupied Territories of the West Bank, along with explanatory and theoretical texts about the methodology of the entire operation.
The book is available online here and in some of the best architectural bookshops in some cities in Europe and overseas. A complete list of them will be available soon on this website.
February 25th 2010 [LEAVING FOR L.A.!]
Salottobuono at UNPLANNED.
Salottobuono will exhibit the Manual of Decolonization at UNPLANNED: Research and Experiments at the Urban Scale, the first SUPERFRONT LA exhibit of 2010.
Just as the discipline of architecture faces a re-imagination of itself in this era of slow-motion global capitalism, the human population finds itself crossing the threshold to a predominantly urban existence. Many of the basic tenets underpinning urban planning – Cartesian geometry, programmatic taxonomy, contextualism – have been subject to skeptical investigation and rebellion in architecture throughout the past decade. Yet conventional urban planning continues, the discipline of urban planning operating much as it has since the 1960s (if not the 1860s). Leveraging an interdisciplinary focus, UNPLANNED: RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTS AT THE URBAN SCALE boldly presents a collection of radical methods for envisioning and producing space at the urban scale.
A group exhibit with more than twenty participants, UNPLANNED spans architecture, urban design, industrial design, conceptual art, and cartography to present an array of experimental work at the urban scale. Multi-disciplinary practitioners address emergent urbanism, “wild building”, and other alternatives to conventional urban planning. The exhibit is curated by SUPERFRONT Founder + Director Mitch McEwen with Associate Curator Cecilia Brock and Gallery Intern Jackie Koenig.
Work is exhibited in multiple formats, from physical models to drawings, animations, software applications, consumer products, and live film. Dealing with urban situations from derelict construction sites to refugee camps, favelas, temporary housing and other contemporary spatial phenomena, the exhibition confronts the current economic crises and larger issues of globalization.
